How to find the right job
Deciding which job you want is the first step of job hunting. Before you start, make sure you have the skills and experience required to perform the job role you are seeking otherwise you will end up being disappointed if you apply for a beauty therapist role where the minimum requirement is NVQ level 3 qualifications and you only have level 2.
The next step is knowing where to start looking for work. Companies used to advertise in the local papers or in the job centre when looking for new staff or often in the spa and beauty and leisure field, word of mouth was a popular choice. However, now companies use specialist recruitment companies; on-line jobs websites and their own websites to attract new applicants. Here are some suggestions of ways in which you can conduct your job search:
- Recruitment consultancies – if you are in a job but want to move on to your next opportunity; recruitment conultanties maybe your best option. Job hunting is time consuming and the internet is excellent but may not offer you the confidentiality you are looking for so your current employer remains unaware of your intentions to look for a new job. With recruitment consultancy, they can represent you and keep your identity private and confidential. They can also do the hard work of searching for the ideal job; helping you present your CV and prepare you for the interview process ahead. The other benefit of working with a recruitment consultancy is that they maybe aware of positions that cannot be advertised due to a confidential nature within the company concerned. They are also likely to only represent you to positions they are confident you can get as they have their reputation to consider when presenting candidates to their clients.
- Recommendation / referral – an excellent method of job hunting is asking everyone you know in the relevant field if they know of any job openings. If they are in a position to recommend you, this puts you in a strong position ahead of other applicants.
- Job boards / social media– the internet offers jobseekers a fantastic resource where you can search vacancies from the comfort of your own home. Equally, social networking sites is a powerful way of messaging all your contacts to see if they know of any great opportunities in your line of work.
- Networking – there is nothing like being face to face with a potential employer so that you can make a memorable impression on them in the hope they may want to offer you a job. Attending industry events and exhibitions is an excellent way to network and interact with managers and company owners who may be interested in employing you.
