WRITING YOUR CV
Probably the most important thing to remember when writing your cv or preparing to send it to a potential employer is that this document could be your passport to gaining an interview for a prospective role. As such it must strike with maximum impact in terms of its layout, spelling, grammar and the information you are giving about you. Below are some important guidelines which may be used to help you get that all important interview! Example CV
It is a good idea to include a profile (summary) near the top of your cv which should be a few lines illustrating your strengths, skills and ambitions in relation to your work career and should also be relevant to the position you are applying for.
- In terms of layout, keep it simple using two or three font sizes at the most and black print on a white background. Colours are pretty but only divert the readers’ attention away from the text and can lead to the reader making assumptions about you which may be incorrect.
- The education and career history sections should give clear dates, title and employer/establishment information. It should be in chronological order and begin with the most recent. Any gaps should be explained.
- Information relating to periods of employment should be clear, concise and factual. Where possible it should demonstrate achievements and responsibilities and these should be quantifiable where appropriate. Bullet points are an excellent way of setting out this information.
- Be honest and avoid stretching the truth. Remember that you may be questioned intensively about information you have given and therefore you will need to be able to back this up.
- Try to keep your cv to two pages in length. Always proof read it before sending and ensure you have spell checked it.
Now it is ready to go and you have left as little as possible to luck
